Weather

With the heavy rainfall of April it is difficult to realise a drought still exists, with ground water being extremely low. Over the past two / three years we have become used to more dry days than usual throughout the year.

Normal average rainfall for any twelve month period in this part of the county is approximately 650mm. The graph below shows the annual rainfall upto to each month listed.

e.g. During the twelve months ending with 31 October 2010 we had 592mm. In the twelve months to the end of November that year we had just 539mm. In the twelve months to the end of December 2011 we received just 423mm and to the end of March 2012 just 415mm.

Only when the blue bars are regularly exceeding 600mm can the drought be claimed to be at an end.

The large rise for April can only be partially attributed to this years wet April, one has to remember that last April (2011) we only had 3mm (instead of the expected 50+). This affected the following 11 months annual totals
